Shipping and Logistics for Outdoor Products: What Importers Need to Know
Shipping is often the most confusing part of importing from China. This guide covers everything you need to know about getting your outdoor gear from our factory to your warehouse.
Shipping Methods
Sea Freight (FCL): Full Container Load. Most cost-effective for orders over 15 cubic meters. A 20ft container holds approximately 28 cubic meters. Lead time: 25-40 days sea + customs clearance.
Sea Freight (LCL): Less than Container Load. Good for smaller orders. Your goods share a container with other shipments. Slightly higher per-unit cost but lower total cost for small orders.
Air Freight: 5-10x more expensive than sea but takes only 5-10 days. Suitable for urgent orders, samples, or high-value products.
Express (DHL/FedEx/UPS): Best for samples and small parcels. Door-to-door service. 3-7 days delivery.
FOB vs CIF vs DDP
FOB (Free On Board): Supplier delivers to port and loads onto ship. Buyer arranges ocean freight, insurance, and customs. Most common for experienced importers.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): Supplier arranges and pays for shipping and insurance to destination port. Buyer handles customs and onward delivery.
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Supplier handles everything including customs clearance and duties in your country. Most convenient but most expensive.
Packaging Considerations
Outdoor products need robust packaging for sea freight (high humidity, salt air). Our standard packaging: individual polybag, then color box, then master carton. Moisture-proof bags for ocean shipping. Custom branding on both product and packaging.
